It’s NOT Crazy to Use Social Media for Marketing Your Business

Do you have what it takes to make a success of it? Does it feel too confusing? Too complicated? Are you afraid to put yourself out there because you don’t know which conversations to jump into, let alone how to do it?

Social media is all about building relationships with people in your community.

It’s about being sociable, being pleasant, being helpful, and being visible. It’s about remembering that you’re dealing with real people and you want to treat them like you want to be treated.

You also need a basic knowledge of whom is using each networking platform. For example, you’ll want to use a more professional tone on LinkedIn, while you can be more relaxed (but not too relaxed) on Facebook.

If you approach social media marketing from a selling perspective, you will repel people. Because, while people love to buy things, they don’t want to feel like they’re being pushed into buying from you.

While social media is “organic”, meaning you don’t pay for it like you do when you purchase advertising, it does cost you in time, energy, and commitment.

If you’re going to do social media marketing correctly, you must set up a schedule to do it consistently! This is absolutely key to your success!

With this few things in mind, I’d like to introduce you to…

    • Hi Katarina, Great to connect with you. Funny you should mention strategy and plan…guess what’s coming after the alphabet???

  1. I love fun and interactive posts. Looking forward to joining you on your FB page in January and seeing your ABC revealed… 🙂

    • I’m so glad you’ll be joining us Erika. I’ll look for you there. Be sure to pop in with your suggestions.

    • Did your group enjoy it Jackie? I find when people bounce ideas, they get more creative and some rare jewels emerge.

  2. Love your message about whether or not a person is suited for social media…not everyone is (in my opinion). So many people don’t understand that social media marketing isn’t about posting sales and offers only. They don’t like that it takes time and relationship building. The alphabet idea is such a fun way to involve people, I’m sure it will be a big success!

    • Social media really is an important way to market an online business. I’m pondering your statement… do you think, Meghan, the people who aren’t comfortable with social media are really those who don’t fully believing in their business or services/products? It seems to mean if a person is excited about something, they’d be happy to talk about it. Or do you think the hold up is the “not knowing how to do it” part? I’d be interested in your opinion.

  3. So true.. working in social media, like you.. it’s all about relationship building and many just don’t understand, it isn’t about promoting their biz 24/7!

    • I agree with you Kristen. The fun thing is, we can be ultra targeted in the relationships we form PLUS we can chance across other relationships that are so unexpectedly wonderful.

  5. A is for attitude. You can’t be negative on social media. You have to keep a positive, uplifting attitude. Complainers need not apply.

    • You’re right Carol. A positive attitude really is key…coming from the point of view of helping others. It gets rid of that icky selling feel, doesn’t it?

  6. I was just creating my social media schedule today. I think social media is for me, but admit the learning curve has been steep. Looking forward to it all feeling really natural!

    • Hi Brenda, When you find your style, your voice, you’ll finally feel comfortable with social media. It helps me to picture each person I connect with on social media as a friend coming to my house for a visit. That warmth will spill over into the words you choose.

  9. “A” is for automated tweets and posts through Hootsuite or similar service with real-time engagement in between the automated messages.

    • I’m with you Vickie on automation. I love Hootsuite. However, my Social Media A word is something different than that. Looking forward to everyone’s ideas. See you on Jan 1.

    • Thanks Sheryl, When I try to do stuffy fact-filled stuff I procrastinate. But making it fun gets it done! Social Media should be fun, because it’s connecting with great people. Looking forward to your comments on the alphabet.
